First pit-stop during the long drive, Rein’s N.Y.-style Deli in Vernon, CT.
We got there early so it wasn’t very busy yet.
Rein’s famous Dill Pickles and Potato Pancakes
Our next major pit-stop for lunch in Belfast, ME.
Captain Seaweed was there to greet us!
View of Belfast Bay
A boat tour of the bay ... maybe next year.
We were both pretty hungry by now.
Ahh! The first taste of lobster for the season. Yum!!!
Another long-anticipated first for the season: pizza at Rosalie’s
Tradition dictates a plain pizza on the first night in Bar Harbor
Along with two pints of Shipyard Export Ale.
Hand-tossed dough
Hand-tossing really makes a difference.
Check out that intense expert concentration!
After pizza we go for a walk through the waterfront attractions.
We find plenty of bright warm color at the Bar Harbor waterfront.
Stewman’s Lobster Pound is very busy this evening.
Sunset, too, is very peaceful and colorful down by the waterfront.
We watch a female mallard duck swim by the pier.
Local fishermen call it a day.
This funny sight in the parking lot made us laugh.
Several years ago we watched a surveyor establish a temporary survey point here.
It’s a long story but we actually helped him locate several nearby tidal benchmarks. (We hunt benchmarks, too!)
Early the next morning we head for breakfast at the rustic Black Friar Inn.

Another unusual method of anchoring granite steps
Rich pauses by a large cairn indicating the correct way.
More cairns continue to mark the old trail.
The third granite staircase we encountered in our quest.
We pass a very large boulder ...
… and more signs of the once viable trail.
Here the Van Santvoord trail emerges onto open ledges ...
… and provides a splendid ocean view.
At the Triad Summit where the trail once met with other island paths
A bronze plaque commemorates the efforts of a once prolific trail-builder.
We return to the Black Friar Inn for dinner.

Today we take the ferry to Winter Harbor and Schoodic Peninsula
This is a new experience for us and we’re very excited.
Getting underway. The bay is very calm this morning.
Today’s visiting cruise ship is already ferrying “cruisers” to shore.
“That thing is as big as an island.”
“It’s actually BIGGER than an island!” (We say this every year!)
“Good thing we’re getting out of town.”
Smooth sailing, we’re already enjoying the trip

Visitors stroll the ledges that make up the rocky shoreline
Zhanna and her dad hike the Anvil Trail, Schoodic Point
This is a very rugged and steep trail.
But there are some well-placed staircases along the way.
Rich chose to stay down by the shore ...
… where it was quiet and very restful.
Our mission for this morning began on Cadillac Mountain.
We hoped to locate an obscure artifact constructed over a century ago.
First, we had to locate the original route of the Cadillac West Face Trail.
After a brief period of searching in a likely area, we made the find.
The goal: a deeply carved cross and a two-inch thick iron bar.
These items had once served as a property corner survey mark. We’ve since learned that there are three more for us to find!
Nearby we found another iron rod with an unknown purpose.

Rich’s immediate reaction when he saw them, “Wooo!”
