Saguaro in Progress
Planted: 3 August 2007Germination: 1 out of 5; 20%
I followed a procedure I had seen on several websites. My growing mixture was a combination of commercial cactus soil and perlite, mixed approximately 1:1, sterilized. Seeds were placed atop wetted soil and then enclosed in a quart-size plastic bag. I originally began this pot in my living room window, which gets strong morning sun but then is shaded for the rest of the day. A few weeks later, I decided to move the pot upstairs, to a window that gets bright but indirect sunlight much of the day, and is also a warmer location overall. The first seedling popped above the soil five days after planting. I have yet to see more seedlings appear in the pot. It's all a learning experience!

...Saguaro seedling, 9 days after planting. |
...There's still just one seedling in the pot, but it is still growing and multiple spines are showing. It's actually starting to look like a cactus! |
