Organ Pipe in Progress

Planted: 13 August 2007
Germination: 5 out of 8; 62.5%

I followed a procedure I had seen on several websites. My growing mixture was a combination of commercial cactus soil and perlite, mixed approximately 1:1, sterilized. Seeds were placed atop wetted soil and then enclosed in a quart-size plastic bag. The pot was placed in a window that gets bright but indirect sunlight much of the day. The first seedling popped above the soil three days after planting. Three came up the next day, and the fifth appeared on August 24.

Organ pipe seedlings, 6 days after planting. An arrow indicates one that is just coming through and is hard to see at this stage.

Five seedlings are apparent now, on August 27. They seem to be growing well, and the oldest one (in the lower left corner) looks like it may start to grow a spine soon.
