Checked out, stopped at visitors center (saw Ben again!), breakfast, stopped (somewhere -- look at map! for snacks), Hubble Trading Post/prairie dogs, to Painted Desert visitor's center where we watched the movie, bought earrings and Route 66 hat at Fred Harvey store, then began visiting the overlooks. Did all overlooks through Painted Desert Inn (Kachina Point--found BM) but then skipped the rest of the overlooks except Route 66 so that we could get to Puerco Pueblo in time for 2:30 ranger program. Hallie was the ranger and the talk was excellent. Did Newspaper Rock, Agate Bridge, possibly one other overlook before going to visitors center at south end. Found out from Rita that we could basically hike anywhere we wanted as long as we weren't visible from designated trails and all four wheels of the car were to the right of the fog line. Went to the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook where we got Wigwam #1 (closest to road, furthest from tracks that reviewers had complained about). Went for supper at Joe & Aggie's. Got beer and snacks at Safeway and went to bed.

Food: Junction Restaurant: eggs, hamburger with gravy, biscuit (R);, scrambled eggs and bacon; juice and coffee. Joe & Aggies: cheese crisps (ground beef and red chile sauce; chicken and hot green chile sauce), chicken taco, Dos Equis

Canyon de Chelly

After breakfast did White House Ruins hike, then did rest of South Rim overlooks that we didn't get to see yesterday. The vortex hat was busy again: rain started at Face Rock overlook and was pouring by Spider Rock overlook. Came back to room to get dried off, then did the North Rim overlooks, with the exception of Ledge Rock, which we couldn't find. It seemed to be the blocked off road at around mile 5.5. Awesome ruins, especially Antelope House (with antelope pictographs running up side of cliff). Photos of R at Mummy Cave. We asked at the visitors center before leaving on Thursday--Ledge House has been closed for 5 years because of vandalism and resident complaints; and the monument atop the hill across the bridge from the visitor's center supposedly is a survey monument of some kind, as we had suspected, although it is not accessible.

Food: Junction Restaurant at Best Western. Breakfast: Junction "Blue" overlook (blue corn pancakes, 2 strips of bacon [not blue]); 2 eggs, chicken fried steak, frybread, home fries (R); coffee and cranberry juice. Dinner: mutton stew for both, Navajo tortilla. Lemonade and water. Saw "Ben", our guide (the father) at the Junction Restaurant in the morning!

Uninspiring breakfast, then went to Cliff Palace parking area to wait for our guide. We were early so we listened to the previous ranger, Bruce's talk before it was time for our tour. Our ranger was Angela, who was OK but Bruce seemed better. We learned about the construction of the sites and kivas, about the daily lives of the inhabitants, and about some of the controversies. The walk was not difficult, with some ladders and steps along the way. Then we went to the Balcony House tour. Cade was the ranger and the theme was technology (mostly corn). This was a shorter tour with high ladders, tunnels, steps up cliff face. Really great, especially the high double ladder! Then we did the Mesa Top Loop, stopping at all the sites along the way and even finding some unexpected BMs, the museum, and Spruce Tree House hike. Then we did the Far View sites before returning to our room to get ready for supper.

Breakfast: Metate Room: breakfast buffet (R); berries & yogurt parfait, tea, coffee, juice. "Name-tag set!"
Supper: Francisca's Restaurant in Cortez. Stacked enchiladas (beef, green sauce), sopapilla with honey; spicy burrito (chicken with red sauce) - R; pitcher of Tecate.

Kayenta -- Four Corners -- Mesa Verde

Escaped Kayenta mostly intact. Drove straight to Four Corners, finally got photos of station, found RM, found Supreme Court mark. Bought t-shirt and frybread-no 4-corners BM pin here! On to Welcome Center in Cortez and "got stuff, asked questions, got answers" and then came to Mesa Verde. Stopped at overlooks, checked out Point Lookout trail, did Park Point BMs, went to (Far view) Visitors Center (remember tunnel from parking lot under road!) where we got tickets for the Cliff Palace and Balcony House tours for Monday (10:00 and 11:30). Checked in, then went to Naked Moose, looking for AZ MK along the way but could not find it anywhere.

Food: breakfast, McD's, see Saturday. Naked Moose: One Crying Moose (onion blossom w/ranch dressing), Yukon Moose burger (green chile sauce, cheese), sweet potato fries; Easy Moose w/American cheese (R); Moose Drool brown ale, SKA Pinstripe. -->

Monument Valley, UT/AZ

Food: Egg & government cheese sandwich, hash browns; 2 eggs, bacon, toast and pancakes with (!)margarine (R); juices and coffee; beef jerky and dried fruit; Hampton Inn: black bean soup with fry bread croutons, Navajo tacos for both, iced tea.

Notes: Horse on Highway!!! No bath towels at Anasazi Inn - R: "Fred Harvey would be rolling in his grave!" and our attempts to get them. Awesome drive around Monument Valley, stopped at many of the arts & crafts stands, ended up buying Kokopelli and turquoise turtle, John Ford's point and photo on horse!

Oak Creek-Sedona -> Sunset Crater -> Wupatki -> Kayenta

Relatively early start: after breakfast, drove up Oak Creek Canyon (bitch in VW!) to Sunset Crater. Photos and lots of poking around. Hiked short version of Lava Flow Trail. Continued on drive to Wupatki. Saw at least 4-5 witness posts along the way, but stopped for only 2. Great views from all the overlooks. Saw most of the Wupatki ruins, then continued on to Cameron with storms looming (went to Simpson’s market!). To Tuba City (“Well, I guess it’s some form of civilization!”) where we saw a sign denoting a McDonalds “one hour away.” Saw hand-lettered signs for Dinosaur Tracks and finally found the entrance, but didn’t stop. Just past Elephant Feet, we attempted to get to White Mesa Arch but found the road flooded out. Found entrance to Keet Seel and Betatakin Ruins but it was already closed for the day. Finally arrived at Anasazi Inn-what a place!!! Current spider count:1. Went to Amigo Cafe for supper-what a place! Then stopped at Hampton Inn to see if they had any info on Monument Valley tours. They didn’t, but we did buy a packet of mixed cacticus seeds. On the way out we passed a dog that appeared completely dead on the sidewalk. Walking past didn’t stir him. Finally we saw a twitch and realized with relief that he was alive.

Notes: Sunset Crater Visitor Center: N 35° 22.157′ W111° 32.614′
Amigo Cafe (world’s best Mexican-yeah, right!) N 36° 42.641′ W110°14.908′

-Remember to look up electric railway alongside Route 160 – remember vehicle tunnel and horrible road, nice Indians, strange “elevator” and huge conveyor crossing road and over cliffs on E side of road. http://www.utahgeology.com/roadguides.php?hw=hw160

Food: Huevos rancheros for both, grapefruit and cranberry juice, coffee @ Oak Creek Cafe. Cape Cod chips, beef jerky from “Simpson’s Market” on Rt. 89 in Cameron. Beef and green chile burrito (R), tostadas, iced tea at Amigo Cafe … ha-ha!
