Shenandoah – Day 2

Zhanna on rock in front of tunnel, near highway

Zhanna stands near the south portal of Mary’s Rock Tunnel.

A vehicle emerges from Mary’s Rock Tunnel.

Getting ready for the long hike ahead of us on this chilly morning, Zhanna rests on the wall at Tunnel Parking Overlook.

From Buck Hollow Overlook, Rich can see Pignut Mountain, Mt. Marshall, The Peak, Oventop, and other prominent features.

We thought this was a perfect spot to pose together!

Green, orange and gold leaves, gray tree trunks

I was entranced by the bright colors of the leaves against the gray tree trunks.

It’s harder to balance up here than it might appear!

Zhanna looking inside old chimney

Zhanna pokes around in this old fireplace, possibly a remnant of the old mountain men days, along the Meadow Spring Trail.

Rich hikes along this warm, sunlit, gracefully curving section of the trail and begins to climb some steps.

Rich hiking, trail, steps in heavy woods
Bunch of large blue berries

Can anyone help identify these? We just called them Blue Klumpskis (fake Latin name Klumpskus bluus!)

Zhanna finds a sunny ledge along the way.

Rich relaxes on a ledge just off the A-T. The Three Sisters, Neighbor Mountain and Knob Mountain are visible in the background.

There’s something naughty about the view from here.

View of mountains, rocks shaped like butt
Red berries, green and yellow foliage, blue mountains and sky

The foliage, mountains and sky form a layered rainbow.

We’re getting closer to Mary’s Rock!

Rich begins to climb high peaked granite pile
Mountains, forest, interchange

View of the interchange (where MARYS ROCK AZ) is located, from a wide ledge near Mary’s Rock.

Trail marker near our parking spot. The hike to Mary’s Rock may have been only 1.3 miles, but it was challenging, and there’s so much to see along the way!
